Witte de Withstraat: why all of Rotterdam eats here
Ask anyone in Rotterdam where to eat and sooner or later the words Witte de With come up. One street, under five hundred metres long, lined with so many places that choosing becomes the real problem.
Where it is
Witte de Withstraat runs from Schiedamse Vest to the Coolsingel, straight through the centre. One end puts you at the Museumpark and Boijmans; the other has you at the Markthal and Blaak within minutes.
By public transport you get off at Eendrachtsplein or Beurs — both a short walk. Parking is paid; the car parks at Schouwburgplein and Museumpark are closest.
Art first, restaurants after
The street owes its character not to the restaurants but to the art. In the 1980s and 90s the institutions that put it on the map settled here: the art centre now called Kunstinstituut Melly (until 2021 it was named after the street itself), TENT, and a run of galleries.
That art crowd drew cafés, cafés drew restaurants, and within two decades the street had become the eating and drinking heart of the centre. Finding a gallery, a coffee bar and an izakaya on a single block is not a coincidence but the result of that order.
The name comes from Witte Corneliszoon de With, a seventeenth-century admiral. It has nothing to do with food.
What makes it work
It is narrow. There is no room for fifty-seat terraces, so the places are small and there are many of them. That is what gives the street its density.
It is mixed. Not a street of only Italians or only cocktail bars. Japanese, Korean, South American, wine bars, coffee, art — within a hundred metres.
It carries through. Coffee and galleries by day, dinner early in the evening, drinks after. Plenty of people start here with a meal and simply stay.
Practical
Many places take bookings, but not all. We work without them, for instance: you walk in and there is room, or you wait a moment at the bar.
Friday and Saturday it gets busy from around seven. For a quieter table, come earlier or pick a weeknight.
And it all connects: eat here and you do not need to go anywhere else for a drink afterwards.
